Last month, Belgian outdoor furniture manufacturer Royal Botania called upon artists, designers, and creatives at large to use the company’s curvaceous D-Lux chair as a blank canvas for its “Dress Up the D-Lux Contest.”

The company selected Brooklyn-based artist Rebecca Sherman’s project as the winner for its complex images of smoke paintings on triangular mirrors, photographed and pasted on the chair.

Titled “Film stills: Midnight in Paris,” the work integrates the artist’s signature mixture of painting, drawing, photography, collage, digital technology, projection and installation. Sherman embellished the chair with film stills from Woody Allen’s Midnight in Paris, Christopher Nolan’s Inception, and Ernst Lubitsch’s Design for Living by using translucent adhesive acetate paper.

Sherman’s piece will go up for auction and on display at the Design Trust’s 2012 Art + Design Benefit Auction scheduled for Monday, November 12 at New York’s Ralph Pucci International showroom. Hosted by interior designer Kitty Hawks and Interior Design magazine editor in chief Cindy Allen, who both serve on the Design Trust’s board of directors, the annual event raises funds for the non-profit Design Trust for Public Space and brings together more than 500 members of the design community for a dynamic evening of art, conversation, cocktails and bidding.
