This September, the San Francisco chapter of the American Institute of Architects will take over the town for the eighth year in a row with its annual Architecture and the City Festival—30 days of guided tours, family events, and other design-oriented functions to take place in various locales around the City by the Bay.
The theme of this year’s festival, “Architecture of Consequence,” finds its roots in a 2009 program organized in Amsterdam by the Netherlands Architecture Institute. Acting as inspiration and jumping off point for the San Francisco happening, the concept of consequence will be explored by AIASF through a similarly-titled show at its downtown gallery, as well as through “collaborative discussions and dynamic workshops exploring…holistic engagement strategies, community planning processes, flexible urbanism,” and other topics, to be held in conjunction with the exhibition.
Events-wise, that’s only the tip of the iceberg: some 40-plus lectures and tours will be held over the course of the month, ranging from visits to highly designed restaurants, to boating excursions around the city’s waterfront, to the ever-popular San Francisco Living open-house tour. This year’s program will feature outstanding residences from Kwan Henmi, Andy Rogers, as well as eight other area designers; the tours are set for the weekend of September 17, and tickets are on sale now.
