The contribution of Latin American designers to the growth of modernism—and the contribution of modernism to the growth of New York—will be the subject of a two-day symposium at the Bronx Museum, October 28-30. “Beyond the Super-Square: At the Corner of Art & Architecture,” cosponsored by Docomomo and The New School, will feature roundtable conversations and a tour of architectural gems in the Bronx by modern designers like Philip Johnson and Paul Rudolph.
Kicking off the event on Friday at The New School’s Tishman Auditorium, “The Architecture Challenge” will feature a live quiz show about architectural trivia co-hosted by Eva Franch i Gilabert of Storefront for Art and Architecture and artist Terence Gower. Saturday will be devoted to early Latin American modernism, featuring a variety of specialist contributors from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Bronx Museum’s Grand Concourse. Rounding out the weekend is a Sunday bus tour of New York City’s modern architectural heritage in the Bronx led by historian Matthew Postal. Excluding the bus tour, which is $30, all event programs are free with registration. Bus tour attendees can purchase tickets online.
