The advent of spring always reminds people of the beauties of nature, and sometimes that reminder renews eco-awareness. Last month, the world celebrated Earth Day. And this month, one of our industry’s institutions celebrated green design. The New York School of Interior Design presented the third annual Green Design Awards to recognize those who’ve made outstanding contributions to the cause of sustainability.

At the May 4 ceremony and cocktail reception, NYSID honored individuals and businesses in five distinct categories: Perkins+Will for sustainable design of interior spaces; Designtex for using sustainable practices in manufacturing interior products that promote environmental health; The Steel Yard and its founders Clay Rockefeller and Nick Buata for green development and construction through its training programs; InterfaceFLOR for green design practices and its goal of achieving a zero environmental footprint by 2020; and Bill Browning of environmental consulting firm Terrapin for his sustainable design advocacy and foremost strategic planning in the green building and real estate industry.

The award winners received a medal designed by celebrated architect Michael Graves, who serves on NYSID’s International Advisory Board. A nominating committee—including our own green blogger Penny Bonda and Interior Design Hall of Famer Clodagh, among others—selected the honorees.
