AIA Headquarters Hosts Spanish Architects Exhibition

Eminent architecture historian and scholar Kenneth Frampton is one of a team of curators who helped selected 62 projects by young Spanish designers, largely unknown in the US, for an exhibition at the main office of the American Institute of Architects in Washington, DC. Open to the public September 15 to October 15, the show, titled “YAS: Young Architects of Spain, a Window to the Unknown,” kicked off with an opening-night lecture by Professor Frampton followed by a panel conversation with some of the featured architects.

Sponsored in part by the Embassy of Spain’s Cultural Office, YAS highlights the work of younger practitioners, with all of the participating designers under the age of 40. The projects on view represent the efforts of nearly 100 individual professionals, firms, and collectives, each of whom demonstrates a commitment to formal exploration and sustainable building practices. That commitment was the guiding principle in the selection process for Frampton and his colleagues, who included Spanish designer Alberto Campo Baeza, theorist Manuel Blanco Lage, and Finnish architect Juhani Pallasmaa, as they made their choices from a group of some 700 projects submitted for consideration.

The AIA building is located at 1735 New York Avenue NW, just a stone’s throw from both the White House and Washington Monument.

This is great because we can all learn a lot from Spanish designers who bring great passion to the design world.
