Atlanta Train Stations Get Arty with Corian

Train-goers along the Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority system (MARTA, as the locals call it) have been getting a special, arty treat of late. “Light Up Atlanta,” an exhibition commissioned by area construction supplier C.H. Briggs, is bringing a series of elaborate sculptures to platforms, plazas, and entryways throughout the network. All made from DuPont’s Corian material, the installations range from the whimsical—a box fan melting into the floor—to the practical—an elegant, curving bench—to the lyrically abstract.
Each piece, subtly lit from below to exude a somewhat otherworldly aura, was designed by an Atlanta-based artist and tailored to suit its particular site. Kellen Minor’s “Seed Bench” at the Peachtree Center is a suitably organic spot to sit; Shelly-Anne Tulia Scott’s graceful “Peeling Back the Heart” stands at the symbolic heart of the city, the Five Points. The designers were tasked with interpreting “what Atlanta means to them,” and the diversity of their creations is an accurate reflection of what has become one of America’s most multi-faceted urban hotspots.
“Light Up Atlanta” will be on display through July 8.
