You can’t keep a funny man down. NBC may have pulled the plug on “The Tonight Show with Conan O’Brian,” but the comic is back—in style—with a new late-night talk show on TBS. Having carefully curated a spectacular new set, designers for “Conan” specified Jim Thompson fabric as part of Conan’s mise en scene.
Production Designers John Shaffner and Joe Stewart of Shaffner/Stewart first opted for a Jim Thompson textile when they designed the set for “The Tonight Show with Conan O’Brien.” They’ve re-upped with the Thai-based silk textile specialist for “Conan,” dressing the set in Celeste, a cosmic whirligig of a pattern that provides a shimmering backdrop for the show’s super nova of a host and his galaxy of visiting luminaries.

A jacquard weave with tiny scattered stars, the textile features contrasting navy warp and copper weft yarns, which give the fabric a metallic sheen when it catches the light. It is used not only for the main curtain of the “Conan” set, but also for the band bay. Jim Thompson’s Black Jack (in Elk Tan) also serves as the secondary or backstage curtain behind the main entrance curtain.
“Shaffner/Stewart has created a brilliant set for ‘Conan,’” said Chad Holman, vice president of Jim Thompson, North America. “We are over the moon that they once again selected Jim Thompson fabrics to work their magic for Mr. O’Brien.”

Not crazy about the giant cheese grater panels. Too distracting.
