AIA’s Los Angeles Chapter Names Winners of Annual Design Awards

NEXT LA Honor & Best in Show Winner No Mass House by Neil Denari

AIA|LA doled out its yearly Design Awards last week, with local favorite and Hall of Fame member Neil Denari taking three trips to the prize podium during the evening gala at the Pacific Design Center‘s Silver Screen Theater in West Hollywood.

Besides Denari, some 40 firms were recognized for recent project work, along with another 36 Presidential Honor winners. Two types of jury awards were on offer this year, the Next LA prize and the mainline Design Awards, each broken down into three tiers—Citation, Merit, and Honors.

Denari came home with top honors in both main categories: his No Mass House, a white, unfolded three-dimensional paperclip, took away Next LA’s Best in Show award, while his chrome-faced HL23 residential condominium near Manhattan’s High Line Park was named Best in Show in the Design Awards Honors category.

As if that weren’t quite enough, Denari was also a Presidential Honoree, making him three-for-three for the night.

Other projects singled out for recognition included speculative design Target Nation from Roger Sherman Architecture Urban Design (with Greg Kochanowsk); Brooks+Scarpa (with Moore Ruble Yudell Architects & Planners/Behnisch Architekten)’s Municipal Parking Garage in Santa Monica; and San Francisco State University’s Mashouf Performing Arts Center from Michael Maltzan Architecture.
