Hickok Cole Set to Break Ground on NYU-DC

It’s not just students that are putting their noses back to the grindstone at New York University this September—Hickok Cole Architects is set to break ground on a brand-new academic center for the school in the nation’s capitol.

While students are breaking out their books, Washington, D.C.-based A&D firm will be breaking out its shovels for the Constance Milstein and Family Academic Center following a private ceremony on September 20.

Dubbed NYU-DC, the 12-story building will include space for academic programs, support staff, lobbyists, and six floors of dormitories with the capacity to house approximately 127 students and faculty each semester.

The facility, which is aiming for LEED Gold, will boast a vertical glass-fin system to provide shading and privacy for the dormitory rooms while a balcony running along its façade, outside of a reading room, will visually separate the dormitories from the academic areas below. Hickok Cole’s design also calls for a visually bold interconnecting staircase to run from a glass-encased first floor student lounge to the academic areas above.
