Nolita, as most New Yorkers will tell you, is the one of the city’s older neological neighborhoods: compounded from the phrase “north of Little Italy,” the moniker has been around longer than those of some other pseudo-subsections (FiDi, ClinPro), and the trendy SoHo-adjacent nabe has lately become home to an increasing number of hip night spots. And now, as if to confirm its ascendancy, the neighborhood has its own eponymous hotel—the Nolitan, which has just announced that it will officially open for business on August 1st.

Located just off the Bowery on Kenmare Street, the new 55-room boutique operation occupies a building designed by Manhattan-based Grzywinski+Pons. This is not the duo’s first upscale hotel in the area: they were also the team behind the nearby Hotel on Rivington, and they have a couple other downtown residential projects to their credit. Their approach at Nolita stressed “continuity” with the surrounding buildings; a glass facade lines the first floor, and select guestrooms let visitors take in the street life from balconies above.

The architects also put together the interiors for ellabess, the new on-site restaurant from chef Troy Unruh. Additional amenities of note for the design-inclined include a library, curated by high-style publisher Phaidon Books, that’s connected to a comfy lobby-lounge, as well as a 2,400-square-foot roof deck with panoramic city views.
