New York’s Dream Hotel Debuts New Space for Fashion Week

Hospitality tycoon Vikram Chatwal launched Dream Hotel in Manhattan’s Chelsea district this past June—a 190,000-square-foot emporium of bars, guest rooms, and eateries, done out in a kind of deluxe surrealism with hefty dashes of “Inception.” (Notably, Leonardo DiCaprio was on hand for the opening gala.) Now, to coincide with the annual running of the overdressed bulls that is New York Fashion Week, the Dream is rolling out a new space: The Electric Room.

The venue is aptly named, occupying what was once a utility space in the basement of an historic mid-century building by Louisiana-based architect Alfred C. Ledner. So what’s down there, design-wise? Well, not much, besides perhaps the odd fuse box: the space is small, with a maximum capacity of only 100 people. But look for it to fill up fast, since this electrical closet is a project of popular nightlife impressario Nur Khan (Don Hill’s, inter alia).

The new nightspot is coming online just a month after the opening of Ph-D, an indoor/outdoor lounge created by Frank Fusaro and Elga Killinger of Handel Architects. Contrasting with The Electric Room’s gritty, subterranean feel, Ph-D features plush Italian leather couches, custom marble tables, and expansive views of Manhattan’s West Side.
