Karim Rashid Designs First Residential Interior

Karim Rashid—the design world’s sartorial answer to Tom Wolfe—is pulling back the curtain on his first-ever residential project, a soup-to-nuts interior scheme for upscale Miami condominium mybrickell.
Located just south of downtown on the west side of Biscayne Bay, the building itself is the work of longtime hometown favorite (and Miami Vice cameo regulars) Arquitectonica. Reports from the local real estate press suggest that the structure is a reduced version of a previously proposed high rise, evidently in the works for some time; Rashid’s involvement is a more recent development, and seems geared to put the condo in a league with another designer-branded, signature-titled condo just down the road—the nearby Icon Brickell, part of the Yoo by Starck franchise.
mybrickell’s interiors look to be typical of the outré Rashid, whose colorful and biomorphic product and furniture designs seem tailor-made to the tropical climes of South Florida. His contributions include an orange-and-white clad lobby with moulded fiberglass fixtures and op-art-ish sculpture; a rooftop gymnasium and pool, with still more creamsicle-orange highlights and views of the (other) City by the Bay; and, in the apartments, Rashid’s dizzyingly-playful Digipop carpeting. Also, with an additional upgrade, buyers can get a whole package of Karim-approved extras: “laminate wood flooring, an Italian printed glass kitchen from Scavolini, custom tiles for the bathrooms, Italian bathroom fixtures,” and more. But can you get a closet of pink and cream suits?
mybrickell is located at 500 Brickell, ground floor, Miami, Florida, mybrickell.us.

Great talent – average work. Ever since his “silk road” restaurant in Vegas, his interior design work has looked blah. Maybe Karim should just stick to product design, but we all know how that wont pay the mortgage. ID is were the cash is – right Karim?
